Dr. Cooper has an exciting show set up for this Friday’s Karamu He’ll be celebrating Black Music Month with Lowrider band; as well as supporting the book signing of Dr. David Canton of Connecticut College.
Lowrider Band has been making music together since 1969. The band includes four singer-songwriters; Howard Scott, Harold Brown, Lee Oskar and B.B Dickerson.. They come from Southern California and have several chart toppers including “Low Rider”, “Slippin’ into darkness” and “All Day Music”. Their sound is described as an “eclectic brew of Latin, R&B, rock and funk on a saucy platter of contemporary jazz and hot Jamaican reggae” by yoshis.com. Dr. David Canton is coming to speak on his book “Raymond Pace Alexander: A New Negro Lawyer Fights for Civil Rights in Philadelphia” which was published in May 2010 and received the W.E.B Dubois Book Prize from the Northeast Black Studies Association. This book is the first study of the Raymond Pace Alexander, a prominent African-American lawyer and judge from Philadelphia. While many texts have been dedicated to nationally known lawyers like Thurgood Marshall and William Hastie, this is about the role Raymond Pace Alexander played during the civil rights struggle here in Philadelphia. Canton has said that his studies are ground breaking discoveries for the world of civil rights historiography. Dr. Canton is also hosting a book signing Saturday June 16th from 2-4 Founder’s Hall at Girard College.
