Intern Reflection and FarewellJun 29, 2012 | News Archive
Video intern Nicole reflects on her summer thus far and says farewell to the WURD audience!
As I come to the end of my internship at WURD, although it has just begun, I realize it has truly has been the best summer of my life. In May I embarked on a school sponsored interfaith trip to a youth village in Rwanda. While only ten days (including travel) the trip really influenced how I think about life, religion and the global community. The youth village was a boarding high school for orphans of the 1994 genocide. While there we helped the students farm, build houses and attended church services and even the weekly Friday night party! I made true connections with a lot of students, who would tell me about the loss of their parents or their difficult life outside the village. We also visited a few memorial sites. One site in particular was extremely taxing. We visited a church were 40,000 people were murdered, and then were asked to enter the room where the pastor used to get ready. Lining the wall of the small narrow room were the skulls of all the people who had died at the site. This unnerving experience made me think a lot about death, and making the most of our lives on earth now. Despite the harder moments, we also had a lot of fun in Rwanda. We went on a safari and played sports and participated in arts and crafts with the students. Overall it was a rewarding experience and I feel so blessed I was chosen to participate.
When I returned to the United States, I began my internship at WURD. I have gained so much experience my 5 weeks here. I have always had an interest in video but never really did anything outside the classroom. Being the video intern, I have been able to practice my camera work and even more importantly my editing skills, which I am now so much more confident about. I have also been very blessed to be surrounding by multiple mentors who have given me excellent advice about the media industry and just life in general. This, combined with the life-changing trip to Rwanda has made this summer truly spectacular. It has been an honor (and a lot of fun!) bringing news and behind the scene footage to the WURD community.Make sure to still check out the WURD youtube page for intern videos. http://www.youtube.com/900amwurd. Next stop, Miami, FL, then a semester in London, UK! Who knows after that? I’ll keep you updated.
