"In order to force themselves to pay attention to each other during dinner at a restaurant this past spring, Dan Rollman, 39, and six friends took their smartphones and stacked them tower-like in the center of the table. They agreed to a rule: The first person to grab for a phone had to pick up the tab. The most difficult moment came during a discussion of a Goldie Hawn film of the 1980s.
