Sara Lomax-Reese highlights what's coming up at WURD!
I can't believe it's almost "Back to School" time. While I am determined to stay present for the remaining weeks of summer, the cool, crisp days of fall -- when we all snap back into high gear -- are just around the corner. Thus far we've had an action packed summer. A few highlights: we continued our commitment to health and wellness broadcasting live from fitness centers and healthy restaurants as part of our WURD Wellness initiative; the Summer of Freedom Library Tour continues to roll through local branches throughout the city; we're in the middle of our 900 In 90 Membership campaign (please join if you haven't already); and we launched our "Sound Check" audio documentary festival July 30th - August 3rd during the Mid-Day Cafe (M-F, 12-1 pm). This was a special broadcast of audio documentaries produced by students from the University of Pennsylvania who participated in our first WURD/Penn collaborative class held last spring.
As we head into the fall, we want all of the parents and grandparents to be prepared for the year ahead. In recognition of this reality, WURD will launch an 8-part series focused on education . Called "Eye on Education: Knowledge is Power," this series will be designed to help parents understand the issues, obstacles, opportunities, and resources available to them to navigate the complexities of the public school system. Moderated by our own Sandra Dungee Glenn, host of School Days (Fridays from 12-1 pm), will feature a wide array of education stakeholders from across the city and around the nation. We will cap off the on air series with a WURD Speaks Symposium on September 28th featuring local and national education experts. So Save the Date - Friday, September 28th -- for this powerful community dialogue.
Stay tuned and stay well,
