MUHAMMAD ALI RECEIVES NATIONAL CONSTITUTION CENTER’S 2012 LIBERTY MEDALSep 14, 2012 | News
Last night at the National Constitution Center, Boxer and American Hero Muhammad Ali received the prestigious Liberty Medal.
The ceremony not only marked the 225th Anniversary of the National Constutiton, but also paid tribute to Muhammud Ali's philantrophy through his 70th birthday year. In celebration of Mr. Ali's life and legacy, Actor Terrance Howard addressed the very diversed crowd, referencing President Lyndon B. Johnson, and admiring how inspiring Mr. Ali has been in his career. Professional Boxer and Daughter Liela Ali spoke about her father's influence and love. After her speech, she stood amongst Gold Medalists Claressa Shields and Susan Francia to present the prestigious medal to fellow Olympic gold medalist Muhammad Ali. The Girard Academic Music Program Choir perfromed a soulful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, inviting the crowd to really becoming one with the ceremony. Mid Morning Host Steph Renee was in attendance, commenting that the event was about the business of love and respect for America's most treasured and honored legend. "It was truly an honor to watch him recieve the award through his Parkinson Disease. You really felt that he appreciated and was in awe of the Medal," says Steph. Mayor Michael Nutter, Governor Thomas W. Corbett, National Constitution President and CEO David Eisner, National Constitution Center Trustee, basketball star, and humanitarian Dikembe Mutombo, and Joe Louis Barrow, II, son of professional boxer Joe Louis were among the many dignitaries who joined the audience that watched and who support Mr. Ali receieve the Liberty Medal.
“Muhammad Ali symbolizes all that makes America great, while pushing us as a people and as a nation to be better,’” said National Constitution Center President and CEO David Eisner. “Each big fight of his life has inspired a new chapter of civic action. We are honored to welcome him back to the Center, particularly during this momentous 225th anniversary year.”
Past recipients of this award include: Mikhail Gorbachev, former Soviet leader, Film Director Steven Spielberg, Václav Havel, President of the Czech Republic, and Thurgood Marshall, former Associate Justice, U.S. Supreme Court, just to new a few...
