WURD Speaks: Black Beauty Politics Recap
Mar 1, 2014 | News

WURD Speaks: Black Beauty Politics was fantastic!! We had a full house, a compelling panel discussion, and a rededication of the series to our founder, Walter P. Lomax, Jr., M.D.

If you were in the house for WURD Speaks: Black Beauty Politics, you witnessed the important conversation about the work we must do as a community to deflect negative media imagery and lasting pathologies from slavery. We also had a great time celebrating the republishing of Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America with Authors Ayana D. Byrd and Lori L. Tharps, and the recent release of (1)ne Drop, by Dr. Yaba Blay.

We also took the opportunity to rededicate this fantastic interactive series in honor of our founder, Walter P. Lomax, Jr, MD. Moving forward, the series will be known as "WURD Speaks Presents the Walter P. Lomax, Jr., MD Speaker Series."

We'd like to thank our panel moderator, Lacey C. Clark!, as well as our panelists: Ayana D. Byrd, Dr. Nada Elbuluk, Solomon Jones, Dr. Robin Smith and Lori L. Tharps. The live hair demos were amazing, too -- special shout out to LeRoi & Cinzia, Rasa Salon, Ryan Foster/ALThaircare, Donnie Hammond Johnson and ESPM Hair Zone.

Here are just a few photos from the evening for you to enjoy, and you can click here for the full gallery!
