The Celebration of Black Writing, May 1-31, is one of the oldest African-American literary events in the nation, boasting something for everyone's taste and mood.

Chicken Bone Beach Photo Exhibition (Opens 5/1) – For years, African Americans vacationing in Atlantic City were relegated to the beach at Missouri Avenue and the popular fare for the summer was fried chicken, which earned the section the nickname of “Chicken Bone Beach.”
Literary and Arts Conference and Workshops (Saturday 5/10 and 5/17) – Two conferences providing access to education and discussion around literary art forms, writing, publishing, the role of black writing and art in society and much more.
Outdoor Festival in Partnership with the South Street Spring Festival (Saturday, 5/3) – A day of learning, interaction, performances, and fun for the entire family.
"In the Sanctuary," Sponsored by PECO (Every Tues/Weds/Thurs in May) – Enjoy a series of live interviews and author readings featuring emerging and established local authors of color. RSVP strongly suggested.
Sanctuary LIVE! (Friday, 5/16) – A multi-genre monthly showcase celebrating the very best in emerging black artists and performers from Philadelphia and beyond – featuring the acclaimed jazz vocalist Laurin Talese! RSVP strongly suggested.
Lifetime Achievement Awards (Friday, 5/30) – Culminating the Celebration of Black Writing is the Lifetime Achievement Award Ceremony, which honors authors and institutions who have been major contributors to the proliferation of black literature and literacy.
