Kernie Anderson

Kernie L. Anderson is a recently retired broadcast executive. He retired after serving over 30 years as a Vice President or General Manager of radio stations, in various markets, throughout the country. 

He was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and attended public schools there. Prior to the start of his broadcast career, he attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. 

He began his career in November of 1963, in the Washington, D.C. area, at WQMR-AM/WGAY-FM; where he rose from a messenger/porter to a program producer and to the merchandising and marketing assistant. In July of 1968, after serving 2 years in the United States Army, he moved to Miami, Florida. There, he served as traffic director, program director and assistant to the General Manager/Managing Partner of WOCN-AM/FM. In 1974, he was appointed General Manager. Following the June 1976 sale of WOCN-AM/FM, he was transferred to Jacksonville, Fla. to manage WCGL. 

In May of 1977, Kernie joined the Sonderling Broadcasting Corporation to manage their San Diego/Oakland station- KDIA. He served there for 4 years. In 1981, after the sale of KDIA and the dissolution of the corporation, Kernie was selected by Egmont Sonderling to manage his last remaining broadcast property – WBMX FM/AM (formerly WOPA/AM) in Chicago. After 8 years there, the station was sold to Barry Mayo and Lee Simmons’ group. After briefly consulting and serving as General Manager of WIZF, in Cincinnati, he was selected to serve as the General Manager of WDAS AM/FM, in Philadelphia, Pa. In June of 1997, after 8 years in Philadelphia, he became General Manager of WBLS/FM and WLIB/AM in New York City. He returned to Philadelphia, after 7 years in New York, to manage WHAT. He retired from WHAT and the industry in October of 2005. 

During his career, he has maintained an active presence in the community; working with charitable, community and industry/trade organizations. Listed below are some of the many organizations with which he has been associated during the past 30 years, serving as Chairman or Board Member. 

He was Chairman of NYMRAD (New York Market Radio) and was a director of the New York State Broadcasters Association. He served on the boards of the Urban League of New York City and Philadelphia, the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania (UWSEPA), Philadelphia Police Athletic League (PAL), American Red Cross – Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter, Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation (PIDC), Philadelphia Radio Organization (PRO), ABC Radio Network Affiliate Advisory Board, Arbitron Advisory Council (representing subscribing Urban stations) and others In 1996, he was elected as an alternate delegate to the Democratic National Convention, in Chicago, Ill.
